Puerperal Fever Medical Malpractice

Puerperal fever is caused by an infection following childbirth. Puerperal fever was a common cause of miscarriage and death of the mother in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Puerperal infections are still a cause for concern in pregnant women. These infections can be caused by endometritis, myometritis, and parametritis - which are infections in the uterine lining, uterine muscle, and surrounding area, respectively.

It is important for doctors to be aware of the potential for infection during pregnancy, during labor, and immediately after childbirth. Failure to properly monitor the patient, delayed treatment, improper treatment, or improper medication can cause the mother and baby serious injury. When a doctor fails to follow the standard of care of other professionals in a similar situation, the doctor may be liable for any injuries or damage caused. This is considered medical malpractice.
